MR. BOXHALL: No, sir. SENATOR SMITH: Did you see any man or woman attempt to reach a lifeboat while you were on the deck or when your lifeboat was in the water? MR. BOXHALL: Do you mean to rush it, or get in quietly? SENATOR SMITH: To struggle to get in? MR. BOXHALL: No, sir; I did not. SENATOR SMITH: To try to get in or attempt to get in? MR. BOXHALL: I saw several get in, but all I saw try to get in got in. SENATOR SMITH: Did you see any get in from the water? MR. BOXHALL: No. SENATOR SMITH: Did you see anyone in the water attempt to get in? MR. BOXHALL: I did not see anyone in the water. It was dark, sir. SENATOR SMITH: So you could not see anyone? MR. BOXHALL: I could not see anybody in the water. I was looking around for them, keeping my eyes open, but I did not see anyone. SENATOR SMITH: If you had seen some one in the water, what would you have done? MR. BOXHALL: Taken them in the boat at once. SENATOR SMITH: No matter whether its capacity was apparently taxed or not? MR. BOXHALL: I should have taken them in the boat. SENATOR SMITH: You would not have left them? MR. BOXHALL: No, sir. SENATOR SMITH: If you had seen any struggling man or woman in the water - MR. BOXHALL: I should have taken them in as far as safety would allow; but I did not see anyone in the water. . . |

LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Avez-vous vu un homme ou une femme tenter d’atteindre une embarcation de sauvetage pendant que vous étiez sur le pont ou lorsque votre embarcation était dans l’eau? M. BOXHALL : Voulez-vous dire qu’il fallait le rejeter ou le laisser entrer tranquillement? LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Pour avoir du mal à le laisser entrer? M. BOXHALL : Non, monsieur, je ne l’ai pas fait. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Pour essayer de le faire entrer ou tenter de le faire? M. BOXHALL : J’en ai vu plusieurs entrer, mais tous ceux que j’ai vu tenter d'entrer sont entrés. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Avez-vous vu quelqu’un entrer en étant dans l’eau? M. BOXHALL : Non. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Avez-vous vu quelqu’un dans l’eau tenter de monter à bord? M. BOXHALL : Je n’ai vu personne dans l’eau. Il faisait noir, monsieur. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Vous ne pouviez donc voir personne? M. BOXHALL : Je ne pouvais voir personne dans l’eau. Je regardais tout autour, en gardant les yeux ouverts, mais je n’ai vu personne. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Si vous en aviez vu un dans l’eau, qu’auriez-vous fait? M. BOXHALL : Vous les auriez pris dans le canot immédiatement. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Peu importe que sa capacité ait été imposée ou non? M. BOXHALL : J’aurais dû les prendre dans le canot. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Vous ne les auriez pas laissés? M. BOXHALL : Non, monsieur. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Si vous aviez vu un homme ou une femme en difficulté dans l’eau — M. BOXHALL : J’aurais dû les emmener aussi loin que la sécurité le permettrait, mais je n’ai vu personne dans l’eau. . . . |
